Allegheny Energy's Rivesville Power Station Honored with OSHA Star Certification

Greensburg, Pa., February 3, 2005--Allegheny Energy Supply Company, LLC, a subsidiary of Allegheny Energy, Inc. (NYSE: AYE) announced today that the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) honored employees at the Rivesville Power Station, located near Fairmont, W.Va., with Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star certification for superior workplace safety. VPP Star certification recognizes companies whose employees demonstrate a commitment to workplace safety and health beyond OSHA's standard requirements.

Rivesville employees formally received their VPP Star certification during a ceremony at the facility earlier today. As a part of this ceremony, OSHA representatives raised a flag at the station that officially designates Rivesville Power Station as a VPP Star facility.

"Safety has been a core value at Allegheny throughout the company's history, and it continues to be a major focus in our efforts to be a top-performing utility," said John P. Campbell, President, Allegheny Energy Supply. "I congratulate the employees at Rivesville Power Station for achieving VPP Star certification and for maintaining their ongoing commitment to working safely."

According to OSHA, the Star Program recognizes leaders in occupational safety and health that are successfully protecting workers from death, injury, and illness by implementing comprehensive and effective safety and health programs. Facilities recommended for VPP Star status are evaluated according to a rigid set of qualifications, including management leadership and employee involvement; worksite analysis; hazard prevention and control; and safety and health training.

Rivesville's 43 employees, with the support of Allegheny Energy's Environment, Health & Safety Group, worked for more than a year to be considered for this exclusive award that has been achieved by less than one percent of the more than 7 million worksites that OSHA monitors nationwide. The evaluation process is very rigorous and includes an on-site review by a team of OSHA representatives.

"Allegheny Energy Supply is committed to maintaining a safe work environment at all of our facilities, regardless of size," said Kevin C. Geraghty, Regional Director, Harrison/ Rivesville Region. "Achieving this award took a tremendous amount of hard work and cooperation among management, employees and OSHA, and Rivesville employees should be proud of what they have accomplished. We will continue to work with OSHA to find new ways to protect our employees and make sure they go home safely to their families every day."

Allegheny Energy Supply has participated in OSHA's VPP since November 2000. Rivesville is the 10th Allegheny facility to achieve this distinction.

Headquartered in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, Allegheny Energy is an investor-owned utility consisting of two major businesses.
