Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Emissions
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is released to the atmosphere when solid waste, fossil fuels (oil, natural gas, and coal), and wood and wood products are burned. CO2 is the primary compound in a group of gases commonly known as greenhouse gases. Naturally occurring greenhouse gases include water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone. Certain human activities, however, add to the levels of most of these naturally occurring gases.
Allegheny Energy’s CO2 emissions have stayed relatively constant over the past five years. Annual variations in power needs have resulted in a corresponding fluctuation in annual CO2 emissions.
